Project Highlight – A First Home Muji Kitchen Built Around Everyday Mornings at GEM Residence
A thoughtfully designed kitchen created for Mr Azri and his family, where every detail was carefully co-created with our design consultant, Miss Janie, to deliver a first home that feels open, organised, and genuinely lived-in.
Rather than working from a catalog layout, this project was shaped around a narrow galley footprint and a young family finding their rhythm in their very first home together, resulting in a kitchen that stays practical without losing warmth.
A Light, Warm Palette Built for a Compact Layout
To keep a narrow galley kitchen feeling open rather than boxed in, Miss Janie built the palette around contrast and light. Crisp white upper cabinetry lifts the ceiling line, while warm oak-toned lower cabinetry grounds the space and keeps it from feeling cold.
A glass-front display cabinet, lit from within, turns everyday mugs and glassware into part of the kitchen's character, while a marble-effect countertop and tiled backsplash keep the working surfaces bright even in a tight footprint.
Instead of chasing a single visual trend, the result is a kitchen that stays timeless: light, warm, and easy to live with daily.
A Functional Galley Layout Designed Around Daily Routines
Understanding how Mr Azri and his wife move through their mornings, Miss Janie planned the layout so that the hob, oven, and fridge all sit within natural reach of one another, a deliberate response to the narrow shape of the space rather than a constraint fought against.
The layout proves that a compact kitchen doesn't have to mean a compromised one. Every step between prepping, cooking, and cleaning up was considered, so the space works smoothly even at its smallest dimensions.
Purposeful Storage for a First Home
Storage was treated as seriously as the layout itself, designed to keep a first home organised from day one. The kitchen features:
- Pull-out drawers for plates, bowls, and everyday crockery
- A pull-out condiments cart for oils, sauces, and pantry items
- A concealed pull-out bin, tucked out of sight
- An open, lit dish rack positioned for easy daily use
- A glass display cabinet for glassware and everyday mugs
Every drawer and shelf earns its place, so the kitchen stays easy to maintain even as a family settles into daily use.
A Kitchen Shaped by Conversation, Not a Template
One of the defining parts of this project was how closely Miss Janie worked with Mr Azri from the very first conversation. As he put it, "Miss Janie lah yang explain A to Z", walking him through the process from the earliest planning stage to the last cabinet door.
For a first-time homeowner, that clarity mattered as much as the design itself. What could have been an overwhelming decision instead became a collaborative one, with Miss Janie translating Mr Azri's day-to-day routines into a layout, storage plan, and material palette that genuinely fit how the family lives.
Designed Around the People Who Live There
For Mr Azri, this was never just about acquiring a finished-looking kitchen, it was about settling into a first home that already felt like theirs. Working through Carte Kitchen's co-creation process, Miss Janie shaped a space that reflects that milestone: practical enough for daily life, personal enough to already carry the family's own touches, from labelled spice jars to a coffee corner they've made their own.
The result is more than a first kitchen.
It is a space built with care, at the very start of a family's journey in their own home.
Light. Practical. Personal.
A kitchen thoughtfully designed by Miss Janie for Mr Azri, at GEM Residence, Penang, where every drawer has a reason, and every corner already feels like home.
