Carte Kitchen was not the first name they looked at, and they walked in knowing what it would cost. What kept them looking was what they had been watching on Facebook for months, set against every other ID they were comparing.

“Dia sebaya anak sulung kita orang je,” Puan Sharifah shared, Janie being the same age as their own eldest, “tapi dia nampak profesional.” Through the office visit, the samples, the 3D, and every call back after it, the thing she returns to is that Janie knew what to do with what they told her. “Dia tahu apa yang kita nak.” And when the two did not quite match, “dia boleh adjust apa yang kita nak dengan apa yang dia nak hasilkan.”

Asked whether it was worth it, she answered in threes. The consultant performs. The result is the best of it, “apa yang kita nak, yang tu kita dapat.” And on cost, “harganya memang bersesuaian dengan apa yang kami sebagai customer ni minta.”

That is what co-creation looks like when it works. Not a designer deciding on your behalf, and not a customer left to decide alone, but the two arriving at a plan neither would have drawn by themselves.

Then the part that was never about price. “So akhirnya dia telah memberi saya impian yang memang dah lama saya nak.”

A kitchen she had wanted for years, finally built, in a home they had not even planned to move into.
